Kannada bodies' protest on May 21
Bangalore, DHNS:
Various Kannada organisations led by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) has threatened to organise a protest rally on May 21, demanding more jobs for Kannadigas in the Bengaluru International Airport. (BIA).
The KRV activists along with the Bengaluru Nirmapaka Kempe Gowda Kendra Samiti and the Kannada Sangarshana Samithi will organise a rally from Yelahanaka to Raj Bhavan.
The Kannada bodies have alleged that the BIAL led consortium has meted out injustice to kannadigas by awarding the pre-paid taxi operation tenders to private, non-kannadiga companies instead of the KSTDC, which is at present operating pre-paid taxi services at the HAL Airport.
Besides, they have also demanded that the BIA be named after the founder of Bangalore Kempe Gowda and have sought more jobs for the local people. Lending support to the protest will be the Karnataka City Taxi (Controller) Association which will not be operating taxis on May 21. Meanwhile, the BIAL has refuted the allegations and has stated that it has made substantial efforts to reflect the local culture and heritage.
From a recruitment point of view, qualifications and expertise being equal, preference has been shown to kannadigas in the organisation. This has resulted in the employment of 53 per cent of Kannadigas out of the total employee strength of 473 (as on March 31st 2008). Of the 185 managers, kannadigas account to 74 (40 per cent of the total managers), informed sources at BIAL.
Since the end of February 2008, BIAL has received around 2000 resumes from Karnataka local and 574 of these resumes have been submitted by candidates claiming to have lost land when the land for the new airport was originally acquired by KIADB. Out of these 574 applicants, 210 have already been recruited at the airport.
Besides, various concessionaires have also hired local kannadiga talent with the total recruitment made by them being around 2,750 employees.
Albert Brunner, CEO of BIAL said, “BIAL will make sure that preference is given to the kannadigas as far as possible. Furthermore, ours is possibly one of the few organisations that encourage the non-kannadiga employees of BIAL to learn the local language by offering Kannada language classes.”
Trolley retrievers protest
Around 150 trolley retrievers at the HAL Airport went on protest on Monday causing hardship to passengers. The trolley retrievers protested stating that the closure of the airport would leave them jobless and that efforts should be made by the stake holders to provide them with employment.
Commuters had a tough time as they had to handle the trolleys on their own.Kannada bodies' protest on May 21
