Bangalore: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken over the security of the new Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) which goes operational on May 23, the project’s promoter Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said on Friday.
The switch to the new airport will take place at midnight on May 23. All flights landing and departing after midnight will operate from the new airport and flights arriving before midnight (on May 22) and departing after midnight will also operate from the new airport, BIAL said.
The airport, which has got approval from the civil aviation ministry, will be formally inaugurated next month, it said.
Delays due to clearance for operation, demand for retaining the existing HAL airport for short-haul flights and controversy over levy of user charges delayed the planned inauguration on March 28. Delivering a verdict on a batch of PILs, the Karnataka High Court had directed BIAL and the Centre to renegotiate the terms.
BIAL had said that keeping both airports operational was not feasible and insisted that the terms of agreement required closure of HAL airport.
