Road done up a month ago caves in

Bangalore: Bull Temple Road, near Ramakrishna Ashram in Basavangudi, offered a smooth ride till Sunday afternoon. A stretch of the road, developed just a month ago with financial assistance from KMRP, caved in, throwing traffic out of gear and virtually blocking free movement of vehicles.
Though the stretch was dotted with potholes and water leakage and commuters were used to negotiating a bumpy road, it was recently done up by the BBMP.
However, the road caved in due to leakage of BWSSB’s six-inch water supply pipe, at 4 pm on Sunday. Police had a tough time diverting traffic and informed the BBMP and BWSSB control room to repair the road as soon as possible.
Sunday being a holiday, it took a little longer than usual to bring engineers to repair the road. Police erected barricades to make the stretch a one-way temporarily. Traffic was diverted from Chamarajpet towards Vanivilas Road near Jnanodaya School to reach Ramakrishna Ashram Circle.
BWSSB’s assistant executive engineer, V V Puram sub division, Malleshaiah, said the pipe joint had corroded and was leaking for a long time. “Due to accumulation of water for a long time, the road caved in. The corroded pipe has been replaced and it is being joined mechanically,’’ he said. BBMP engineers are likely to restore the road by Monday by filling and asphalting it.
