No road space for city-airport buses

No road space for city-airport buses

Bangalore: Even as the BMTC gears up with 140 buses between the city and the Bengaluru International Airport, a proposal for a dedicated lane for these buses is yet to make progress.
BMTC MD Upendra Tripathy said this was up to owners of the roads to Devanahalli. “The BMTC is just an operator of the service. We’ve requested owners of the roads, the BBMP, BDA and NHAI, to provide a dedicated lane, but there’s been no progress,” he said.
The BMTC recently launched 140 buses to the airport. However, till the airport opens, they might well be stuck in the workshop.
Tripathy said it might not be financially viable to ply these buses on other routes in the city. “The racks that fill up space in these buses will make it unfeasible to operate them in the city,’’ he said.
M N Sreehari, chairman, Traffic Engineering and Safety Trainers, who proposed the dedicated lanes, says they are necessary not only to reduce the travel time but also ensure safety of passengers.
