Mahalakshmi layout is a new constituency in Bangalore City created after the delimitation. Parts of erstwhile Uttarahalli, Rajajinagar and Yelahanka Assembly constituencies have been merged to form the constituency.

The Congress has strong base in the constituency. In the previous council of the BMP, four wards - Mahalakshmipura, Nandini layout, Geleyara Balaga and Nagapura were represented by the Congress members. M Shivaraj who won from Kamalanagar as an independent candidate had later joined the Congress.

Chandramma of the JD(S) represented Vrushabhavathi Nagar.

The Congress has decided to field former MLA N L Narendra Babu from the constituency. R V Harish who recently joined the BJP from the Congress is contesting from the constituency. The JD(S) has not yet selected its candidate. The party’s city wing general secretary T Veeresh and another leader Gopalaiah are main contenders of the JD(S) ticket.

Narendra Babu contested from Rajajinagar constituency in the previous elections and won. This time he chose to contest from Mahalakshmi layout.

The constituency is a mix of both developed and underdeveloped; rich and poor people and educated and illiterates. It is basically an industrial area consisting textiles, food industries, multinational IT companies, call centres and BPOs.

It consists of a good number of parks and playgrounds. Supply of drinking water is not a major problem in the constituency.

Chamarajpet is one among the prestigious constituencies in Bangalore City. Profile of the constituency has changed after the delimitation process. Sudhama Nagar, Dharmarayana Temple wards, which were in the previous elections, part of the constituency have been merged with Chikpet constituency. K R Market, which was earlier part of Chikpet constituency, Azad Nagar, Jagajeevanram Nagar and Padarayanapura which were wards in erstwhile Binnypet constituency have been merged together. The only constituency which has remained intact even after the delimitation is Chamarajpet.

During the previous Assembly elections the then chief minister S M Krishna contested from the constituency on the Congress ticket. He won. After he was appointed governor of Maharashtra, Congress leader R V Devaraj contested in the mid-term polls and lost to JD(S) candidate Zameer Ahmed Khan.

Surprisingly Devaraj’s name has not appeared in the first list of candidates announced by the Congress. The party is fielding Sayeed Ahmed for Chamarajpet. It is said that Devaraj is one of the contenders for the party ticket for Chikpet. The BJP is fielding Shyamasundar Gaikwad. However the JD(S) is yet to finalise its candidate.
The constituency located in the central part of the city is known for its congested roads and underdeveloped areas. Area around KR Market is no different from a garbage dumping yard. Binnymill, Bhakshi garden, flower garden and surrounding areas are slums. The candidate who wins in the election has to take the responsibility of developing the constituency on a par with other developed areas of the city.
