Drive to clean Lalbagh begins on Apr 20

BANGALORE: Officials from the fire, police, Home Guards, civil defence wardens and the Indian Army have joined hands to fight the City's biggest problem __ increasing pollution and unabated littering.

DGP (Home Guards) Jija Harisingh said that all departments had joined hands under the tag Hasiru Kattu, a Green Code for Bangalore which will kick start from April 20.

“Green code initiative has been introduced to enforce the law of making Bangalore a plastic-free zone. The drive will initiate from Lalbagh, where over 3,000 volunteers will stage a rally and will clean up 125 acres of the City's lung space.

The initiative is an effort to bring together who care for the City and to create awareness among people to ensure it's clean, green and litter free,” she said.

Lalbagh has been selected as the starting point as it is the symbol of of Green Bangalore. As part of the Earth Day, a Vintage Car Rally and a walkathon from Cubbon Park to Lalbagh will take place from 8 am on April 20.

Volunteers include members from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Art of Living, Mico Bosch, Infosys, Mind Tree, Bangalore Environment Trust,Walkers Club and college students.

Civil Defence Chief Warden T M John, DD Director Mahesh Joshi and IG and Civil Defence Director Kalyu Rehaman were present at the press meet.

Survey

Representatives of Electronic City conducted a survey on 497 visitors visiting Lalbagh. It was found that 46.5 per cent of the people ascertained that Lalbagh could be cleaner, litter and a plastic-free zone.
