Each Interceptor costs Rs. 21 lakh

They will be procured under the B-TRAC project

BANGALORE: The Bangalore police will soon acquire 10 Interceptors, a state-of-the-art enforcement vehicle developed by the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), for better enforcement of traffic rules and creating traffic awareness among the public.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Praveen Sood on Friday told presspersons on the sidelines of a workshop on “Traffic Management and Road Safety,” jointly organised by Bangalore Traffic Police and IRTE, that the Interceptors costing Rs. 21 lakh each would be procured under the B-TRAC project.

The Interceptors would be mainly used on the outskirts of the city where the enforcement is minimal.

For the past few days, using the Interceptor the police had studied the traffic scenario in some parts of Bangalore city and also around the Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli, Mr. Sood pointed out.

According to IRTE, the contemporary Interceptor is tailored to Indian conditions, requirements and budgets. The Interceptor, which is a system and not merely a set of equipment, would comprise video camera, video recorder, video monitors, vehicle speed monitoring and documentation system, breath alcohol analyzer and pollution analyzer.

The Interceptor has been visualised and developed keeping multiple objectives in mind: mainly evidence-based traffic law enforcement, enforcement on a mobile platform and traffic education.

Using Interceptor for enforcement ensures accurate and reproducible evidence of errant driving behaviour or traffic or infrastructure situations.

Mr. Sood told The Hindu that the Delhi High Court had ruled that the evidence collected by Interceptor was admissible in the court and the police need not produce any other evidence.

Mobility of this comprehensive enforcement tool, according to IRTE, is its unique virtue.

The enforcement crew can conveniently and quickly move over to demanding and strategic locations.

The element of surprise comes as an added bonus, thus eliminating predictability amongst the road-users.

Utilising the onboard audio-visual equipment, the Interceptor can be deployed at diverse locations for audio-visual traffic education programmes.
