Slew of magic boxes, elevated roads on cards

The city will be dotted with 46 more magic box underpasses using precast elements to ease traffic congestion. These were among the slew of development projects announced by BBMP commissioner S Subramanya on Friday. Of the total budget outlay of Rs 2,918,71 crore, Rs 1,600 crore has been allocated for major projects in BBMP for better connectivity inclusive of projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Four elevated corridors, a part of the proposed Inner Ring Road are on the cards —15.6 km at different locations will be put up with an initial allocation of Rs 52 crore.
The four corridors are: the 3.2 km elevated corridor from Rajajinagar entrance to Yeshwanthpur junction via Dr Rajkumar road provides a link from Rajajinagar to busy Tumkur road; 1.5 km elevated road supported by steel stilts along JC road which facilitates bi-directional and signal-free traffic flow for light vehicles; 700 metre platform road from Rajiv Gandhi circle to Srirampuram railway underbridge provides direct access to Yeshwanthpur along the railway parallel road with bi-directional traffic flow; and 10.2 km elevated corridor from Sirsi circle to Kengeri.
In the case of the proposed road from Rajiv Gandhi circle to Srirampuram railway underbridge, it has been planned to have 1.2 mtrs wide central median and 1.5 mtrs wide footpath on either side of the road and with an allocation of Rs 2 crore.
More magic boxes
Work has been completed at Cauvery theatre junction and taken up at BDA junction and Anandnagar. Other important places proposed are - Kanakpura road - ring road junction; J P Nagar; Bannerghatta; Kamakya theatre; Shivananda junction; Race course road junction; Lalbagh road- Siddaiah road junction (Urvashi theatre) and Nayandahalli bus stop junction.
Work has commenced on grade separator projects aided by NURM grants - Gali Anjaneya temple junction; Yeshwanthpur; Nagavara junction; Hennur-Banaswadi junction; Kadirenahalli junction, Puttenahalli, Prof C N R Rao and Tagore circle.
Subways, skywalks and bus stops
Construction of 36 pedestrian subways using pre-cast segment technology has been contemplated on busy roads to help pedestrians. Some of the locations are - Cauvery Bhavan, Lalbagh main gate, K G road, Tumkur road, J C road, Race Course Road and others.
Skywalks with escalator facility have been envisaged at 36 locations on BOT basis. The executing agency gets advertising rights, and 1,100 bus stops would be added to the existing ones on BOT basis. Nirmala toilets would be constructed at 40 places and the existing ones would be maintained at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.Slew of magic boxes, elevated roads on cards
