‘Even 2 airports not enough’

‘Even 2 airports not enough’

New Delhi: The Parliament committee, which has asked the government to keep the HAL and Hyderabad airports open, based its argument on the fact that after opening up of the Indian skies and the resultant competition, passenger traffic at both airports, had grown beyond expectations and even two airports in Bangalore would fall short of requirements.
“The projections were based on 1999 and 2000 statistics when the civil aviation sector was growing at 6% per annum but today, it is growing at 20% per annum. The new Bangalore airport is designed to handle passenger traffic of 9 million per year but in 2007 itself, this figure stood at 9.9 million,” the panel said.
“This is the first time government-owned airports are being closed for commissioning private airports,” it argued.
