Traffic management plan evokes positive response

Any building which has more than 2,000 sq mts of commercial space and any residential complex which has more than 10,000 sq mts of residential space has to submit their TMC to the Palike indicating how much vehicular traffic would be added to the locality because of the occupants.

It is a positive development as far as checking further congestion of roads of Bangalore city is concerned. High rise building owners are responding positively to the new rule of Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike to produce a Traffic Management Plan to the Palike to obtain occupancy certificate.
Speaking to media persons at a programme organised by Bangalore Reporters’ Guild on Saturday, BBMP Commissioner, S Subramanya said that the TMC plan rule which was introduced two months ago has received no resistance from the builders.
“Any building which has more than 2,000 sq mts of commercial space and any residential complex which has more than 10,000 sq mts of residential space has to submit their TMC to the Palike indicating how much vehicular traffic would be added to the locality because of the occupants.”
Mandatory rule
He also added that the new rule had been incorporated to the building by-law and it will be mandatory for all the buildings to present TMC of the area. He said that strict action would be taken against the buildings who converted the basement parking space into commercial establishment.
Admitting that the Palike failed to anticipate additional vehicular traffic due to huge housing and commercial projects coming up in various parts of the City, he said the there were moves to seek TMC from project promoters even before the plans are sanctioned.
Palike responsibility
“As far as city traffic engineering is concerned, the Palike cannot shirk away from its responsibility. We are the coordinating agency, who should propose the city road requirements to the government. We have a traffic engineering cell with experts. Unless we take the problem head on, it can not be solved,’’ he said.
Stating that the Palike had taken up widening of some important roads in the city, Dr Subramanya said the Palike faced problems of land acquisition, road side trees and utilities. “There are 11 organisations, including BWSSB, KPTCL, private cell phone and internet service providers, who dig the roads. We have tried to address this problem on the Race Course road, which is being widened, by providing ducts,’’ he said.
On the issue of asphalting the roads of the City, Subramanya said the Palike needed Rs 1,800 crore to asphalt entire the BBMP areas.
“Presently, we have taken up projects worth over Rs 430 crore” he added.

FLOOD FREE MONSOON

Bangalore, dhns: The Palike is working towards`flood-free’ monsoon next year. Dr S Subramanya said that the Palike was working towards setting right storm water drains in the11 places vulnerable to flooding during monsoons. Work is nearly complete near Central Silk Board and Guttenahalli but land acquisition posed a problem in Padmanabhnagar, which causes flooding to Iliyasnagar.
