Bangalore: The BBMP has accorded top priority to the city’s traffic management. The civic body will draw up a blueprint on traffic management around newly constructed high-rises before occupancy certificates are issued, said BBMP commissioner S Subramanya on Saturday. The aim is to ease traffic congestions.
Talking to reporters, he said the BBMP’s traffic engineering cell will work with the traffic police to identify solutions. A blueprint will be prepared for UB City and other mega complexes that have come up in and around the city.
“Due to our financial crunch, all roads and potholes cannot be asphalted and filled. There is a huge gap between the money required to provide infrastructure and revenue earned by the BBMP,’’ said Subramanya. “For instance, the BBMP requires Rs 1,800 crore to asphalt roads after the inclusion of CMCs, TMC and gram panchayats. But we’re able to spend only Rs 430 crore. Though the BBMP is the nodal agency to provide infrastructure, the funds and grants it’s getting is insufficient,’’ he added.
For better town planning and to curb unauthorized construction, 2,300 notices have been issued to violators. These buildings will not be given occupancy certificates. “Cracking the whip on engineers who have colluded with contractors to allow unauthorized construction, seven executive engineers have been suspended,” said Subramanya.
To ensure quality in projects, a series of reports submitted by Captain Raja Rao, chairperson of the high court committee to study roads and drains, are being implemented. Subramanya also clarified the difference between the Sakrama scheme and betterment fee, and said that they are two different issues.
The BBMP has been toying with the design of the 29-km stretch of the Inner Core Ring Road, as the earlier one was not feasible. There was no scope to shift the utilities as per the earlier design. A fresh feasibility report wil be obtained after appointing a consultant, said Subramanya.
