‘Let HAL airport be a check-in terminal’

‘Let HAL airport be a check-in terminal’

Bangalore: Administrative Reforms Commission chairman M Veerappa Moily has suggested some short- and long-term measures to improve connectivity from Bangalore to the Devanahalli international airport. This project was conceived during his tenure as Karnataka chief minister.
In a letter to governor Rameshwar Thakur, copies of which were released to the press on Thursday, Moily made these suggestions:
HAL airport: As per the agreement, the airport has to close its commercial operations after the new one is commissioned. The existing terminal at HAL airport could be converted into a city check-in terminal for the new airport.
Due to its location in the heart of the city, passengers would like to have check-in facilities there. After they check in, they could be taken in dedicated luxury buses to the new airport. BMTC could hire between 50-100 Volvo buses with provision for luggage compartments.
Approach road from NH-7: All issues relating to construction of the trumpet interchange associated approach road from NH-7 should be monitored on a day-to-day basis by the infrastructure department. “It is pertinent to mention that courts are normally taking a very constructive approach in litigation relating to major infrastructure projects. If the matter relating to trumpet-interchange is pursued in the Supreme Court with sincerity and alacrity, one could be reasonably sure that ultimate outcome could be very positive,’’ Moily said.
LONG-TERM MEASURES
Revive the Express Road connectivity project — build an express road from Krishnarajapuram to the new airport. For this, the blueprint is already ready with the infrastructure and public works departments.
Express rail connectivity: Revive the proposal to have rail connectivity from Byappanahalli.
