Bangalore: What does it take to bring Bangalore to a grinding halt?
Just 1 mm of rainfall. How well equipped are the police to handle such situations? The scene at Cubbon Road on Thursday evening said it all.
Traffic flow, which was unusually slow due to the rain, was thrown out of gear on Thursday, forcing vehicles to come to a standstill. The water logging only made the situation worse.
The situation was quite similar on KG Road, MG Road, Residency Road, Dickenson Road, Old Madras Road, Commercial Street, Ulsoor, Bannerghatta Road, Dr Rajkumar Veedhi, Golf Course Road, Bellary Road, Palace Road and Lower Agaram roads.
Says Prathibha, a resident of Bannerghatta: “it was a tough task to negotiate the stretch between Bannerghatta and JP Nagar. While the road was not visible due to the muddy rain water, potholes filled with water made it all the more difficult.”
Rain water was flowing like a stream at Residency road - Museum road junction making it difficult for motorists to ride, said Purohit, a techie.
Commuting on Kasturba Road, Cunningham Road, Adugodi Road and MG Road was a challenging task for many, as also at Okalipuram, near the railway underbridge, which saw a traffic pile-up.
“The stretch of MG Road has shrunk due to the ongoing work on Metro Rail. During the rain, traffic almost comes to a standstill despite cops controlling the traffic,” said a motorist Abhishek R.
According to the BBMP control room, no complaints of water inundation or tree falling were reported.
Air traffic hit
Congestion at the Delhi airport had its effects here again on Thursday — though moderately. A few flights flying in and flying out were delayed by about 15 to 20 minutes.
The steady drizzle through the day at the HAL airport did not reduce visibility and the landing and take-off of flights.
All flights operated as per schedule, officials said.
