BANGALORE: The much-hyped ‘instant underpasses’ across busy roads in the city are yet to take off.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner S Subramanya told this website's newspaper that the construction of the first underpass would begin near BDA junction on Bellary Road in a few days.

Palike had proposed seven underpasses, five of them on Bellary road, which would be erected in just three days. BBMP is using ‘segment element technology’ for these underpasses.

The technology includes fabrication of concrete boxes on a large scale in a workshop and then assembling them on site. It would eliminate a large amount of construction time on site, to such an extent that assembling would take just three days.

Only assembling of elements would be taken up once retaining walls and approach roads are in place. Palike is taking up these underpasses on Bellary road near Windsor Manor junction, BDA junction, Cauvery junction, Sanjayanagar junction and CBI junction.

The high-level committee on infrastructure had said last month that these underpasses would facilitate a signal-free corridor to the new International Airport.

The other two underpasses would be across K R Circle and Hudson Circle. The total cost of works is about Rs 18 crore.

The Commissioner said the Palike was first planning to start work near Cauvery Junction, but as any activity there would immediately affect traffic on Lower Palace Orchards road and Bellary Road, the BDA Junction was selected for the first underpass.

A segmental arch overpass would be laid across Bellary road with traffic from Palace cross road passing underneath.
