More flyovers for city soon
The BDA has planned three flyovers along the Outer Ring Road, says Leena Mudbidri
Stepping up its concerted efforts towards decongesting and regularising traffic movement in and around Bangalore city, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has given the go-ahead for three new flyovers. These flyovers will enable free flow of traffic on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The flyovers have been planned at the junction of ORR and Magadi Road, at Agara and ORR junction, and at the Iblur-ORR junction, according to T C Kathyayini, public relations officer, BDA. The cost of construction of all the three flyovers has been pegged at Rs 105 crores.

The construction work on this flyover was started in May 2007. The 8-km stretch of road along the link road, which had formerly run into land acquisition problems, has been completed. This road will save commuters a distance of 13 km travel time. According to P N Nayak, chief engineer, BDA, the date of completion of this flyover has been tentatively fixed at December 2007. "There could be unprecedented delays due to the rains and shifting of public utilities such as electric poles and water pipes," informs Nayak.
The cost of this flyover has been marked at Rs 35 crores.

Work on this project is scheduled to begin only after August 15 once the tenders have been finalised. Completion of the flyover is scheduled for late 2008. The estimated cost of the flyover is Rs 30 crores.

Tenders for undertaking the construction of this flyover will be floated in the next fortnight or so, and work is scheduled to begin once the agencies have been short-listed. "The short-listing could take about 20 to 40 days," says Nayak. Regarding the long time taken for finalising the contracts, he says this was only due to strict adherence of the rules regarding the contract works.
The estimated cost of the work on this flyover is Rs 40 crores and the flyover is scheduled for completion within 12 to 15 months.

The decision to build a flyover at the Agara junction is wrong and shows the contractor-politician-babu nexus in full light. Firstly, this is not really a bottleneck the way many of the other junctions on the ORR (Bellandur) are. Secondly, whatever jam that currently exists is mainly due to a lack of regulation of traffic. Why don't the authorities experiment by removing the circle and medians and installing a traffic signal first? This will cost 1/1000 of a flyover and will avoid the chaos and disruption that a flyover brings.
Maybe there is not much money to be made in installing traffic signals.
Yes I agree.
Instead I suggest a fly over to connect the Kidwai Cancer Hospital and Abhaya Hospital on Hosur Road be taken up. It would be more purposeful. The Road at NIMHANS has now become a chicken neck and the advantage of building a flyover at the Dairy Circle has been neutralized. All the traffic to/from Electronic City now stagnates at this narrow road of half a KM , before/after the Dairy Circle fly over.
travelling towards k.r puram is a miserable,ie near the railoway over bridge.the road is very narrow here making it tough for vehicles to move in this stretch.the govt along with the nhai and railway should extend the over bridge like the one near cantonment railway station for smooth flow of traffic.
