Some city roads being upgraded
The PWD plans to strengthen and improve 39 city roads to decongest them and make commuting quicker. B S Manu Rao reports
The Public Works Department has a budget of Rs 683 crores to upgrade 39 'economically viable' city roads to facilitate quick movement of traffic. These roads connect to the different commercial and residential hubs in the city that draw heavy traffic. Also, these roads hold potential for further commercial development in the vicinity.
Essentially, the work involves upgrading the surface of the road. The high quality and strong surface will facilitate a smooth drive and q u i cke r traffic flow. The roads will be widened in some places where it is p o s s i bl e without acquisition. "This is all about optimisation of the road width", says M N Vidyashankar, the State's IT Secretary. The IT Department is keen on this project as it helps in their efforts to attract more IT majors to the city, he says.
The upgradation project is already underway and five roads have been completed. According to sources in the PWD, the project will be completed by the end of this year, with a few roads slated to be ready by March next. The project will make it easier and quicker to reach destinations across the city. This is a major factor that investors look at while choosing a location for a base.
CSB junction flyover to be
upgraded
In addition to upgrading city roads, the Central Silk Board junction flyover will get two additional loops that will make it signal-free. "This is turning into a major bottleneck during peak hours. The loops will make it possible to crossover without a signal light hold-up. Around 1.20 lakh people go to the Electronic City everyday and this will help them reduce travel time considerably", explains Vidyashankar.
More roads leading to
Electronic City
To further decongest Hosur Road, two new access roads are being developed from the Sarjapur Road side and one from Bann e r g h at t a Road side. These will reduce pressure on Hosur Road from people working in E l e c t ro n i c City.
All these measures together will go a long way in enhancing connectivity to some of the localities where the traffic density is the heaviest.
