Heavy rains wreaked havoc on the City on Saturday evening with several areas along Mysore Road being flooded in the downpour.
Vrishabhavathi valley overflowed with sewage water in the night, disrupting traffic. Pedestrians had a miserable experience as they waded through the knee-deep slush.
Farooq, owner of a tea stall situated near the valley, said: “BBMP workers had not desilted the drain for more than 10 days. Excess silt and absence of proper walls in the drain, results in sewage water overflowing every time it rains.”
Residents of Nayandahalli had a nightmarish experience as rain water gushed into their houses.
Nirupama, caretaker of a private plantation in the area for five years now, rued: “Our entire plantation is inundated whenever it rains. Due to damaged drains, sewage water enters the fields and accumulates for days. We have stopped growing crops here. There are some coconut palms. No civic official has bothered to visit this area, though a number of complaints have been made.”
Helpless residents
People at Pantarapalya in Ambedkar Nagar were a helpless lot. A majority of the 1,900-odd houses in the area was flooded forcing the residents out on to the streets. Some of them spent the entire night flushing out rain water with buckets, while others took refuge at nearby schools and government hospitals to protect themselves from the showers.
“Where should women go in such situations? We have been forced to abandon our houses and spend time on roads. I am living here for the past 25 years, but no form of help has been offered to us so far,” Eshwaramma said.
