Police told to thwart designs of terrorists
Proposal sought to strengthen anti-terrorist wing
Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Monday asserted that the reputation of Bangalore as a cosmopolitan city would be protected at all costs. Measures such as tightening security and intelligence gathering would be taken in the light of some youths from the city being detained in connection with the thwarted bomb attacks in London and Glasgow.
Mr. Kumaraswamy told presspersons that Bangalore was a brand name the world over, and when there was all-round development of the economy, it was natural that anti-social and anti-national elements turned their attention towards it. He said a high-level meeting would be held on Tuesday to discuss the urgent need for men and equipment to strengthen the security system to face the challenge posed by such elements. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Home Minister M.P. Prakash, along with the senior officials in the Home and Finance Ministries, would attend, he said.
Mr. Kumaraswamy held consultations with the Principal Secretary (Home) and the City Police Commissioner on Monday and on the progress in the investigation into the possible involvement of some persons from Bangalore in the London and Glasgow cases.
Refusing to elaborate, the Chief Minister said any attempt to blow up the issue would hamper the progress of the investigation.
Media told to cooperate
More information was flowing, and it would be difficult for the police to do their job if sensitive information was leaked to the media. He appealed to the media to cooperate with the Government. Tracing the genesis of terrorist activities in the State to the armed attack at the Indian Institute of Science here, he said Bangalore was gradually becoming a centre for terrorists.
