Students, techies, public clean up lake

The Clean up Benniganahalli lake campaign undertaken by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to create environmental awareness among the public was an instant success.

For a change it was not the Pourakarmika’s who were involved in cleaning up the City.
Instead, it was the turn of students, IT professionals, the general public, who donned their roles as they cleaned the surroundings of the Benniganahalli lake on Sunday morning.

The ‘Clean up Benniganahalli’ lake campaign undertaken by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to create environmental awareness among the public was an instant success as scouts from various schools, college students, IT professionals and the general public gathered in large number to clean up the lake and restore it to its picturesque past.

The campaign, which was kickstarted by BDA Commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda saw these volunteers clean up the piles of garbage scattered around the lake and displayed placards urging the public to maintain cleanliness around the lake surroundings.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gowda said the campaign was undertaken by BDA with an objective to create awareness among the public about the need to keep the environment free from pollution.

“ Our aim is make way for a clean and green Bangalore and this is one way in which the target can be achieved. Involving the public, especially students, in campaigns such as this one is the right step in this direction,” he said.
About 150 scouts from New Horizon Public School, KK English High School, Edit Douglas School, students of Christ College, IT professional from SAP and residents of Pai Layout took part in the clean up drive.

Seeing these volunteers at work joggers and other members of the general public joined them.

Grievance
Residents of Pai Layout submitted a memorandum to Mr Gowda urging him to take immediate steps to clean up the weeds in the lake and to put up a fence to ensure that it is not used for unlawful activities.
Anupama Reddy, President, Pai Layout Welfare Association said that illegal occupants were dumping garbage into the lake bed and desilting of the lake should be carried out inorder to keep the lake clean and neat.
