Greenery getting in pedestrian way!
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Rotary Bangalore Brigades and Hoysala Apartment Owners Association (HAOA) have jointly developed a park in the area adjoining Gurunanak Bhavan on Millers Tankbund Road in Vasanth Nagar.
Develop greenery at the expense of pedestrians in a city where footpaths are already shrinking almost by the day? Well, that seems to be the new pro-green policy adopted by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
Rotary Bangalore Brigades and Hoysala Apartment Owners’ Association (HAOA) have jointly developed a park in the area adjoining Gurunanak Bhavan on Millers Tankbund Road in Vasanth Nagar. The Palike has given approval for the development of the park in the drain area.
Rotary Bangalore Brigades has developed the greenery at a cost of Rs 2 lakh. The park covers areas next to the storm water drain adjacent to Gurunanak Bhavan. A 100-ft stretch which was 8 ft wide had been used as footpath all these days. The park area now covers four electric poles and a telecom box.
Minister for Heavy & Medium Industries Katta Subramanya Naidu, who inaugurated the park on Wednesday, congratulated the Rotary Brigades and HAOA on developing the greenery in a public place earlier used to dump garbage.
He also called upon residents of other apartments in the City to emulate the HAOA’s efforts.
When it was pointed out that the park would be bad new for pedestrians, he said it would not inconvenience the public as “pedestrians have enough space”.
‘It’s BBMP property’
Rotary District Governor Srikanth Chatrapathi said the Rotary Brigades approached the Palike to develop the park as the area was used as a garbage yard. “We are thankful to the Palike for granting our request,” he said.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (BBMP) Krishna Udupudi, however, said that though “the park has been developed by others, it is the Palike’s property. If we find that it is affecting the public in any way we will consider removing it”.
Asked whether the Palike would give permission to all residents who come forward to develop greenery in public places around their apartment, he said: “The Palike will give permission only if the proposed park does not affect the general public.”
