BBMP to fine parking violators

BBMP to fine parking violators
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Parking on footpaths or sidewalks is going to leave a deep hole in your wallet as BBMP has proposed to impose a penalty of Rs 5,000 on four-wheelers and Rs 500 on two-wheelers.

Traffic violators beware! The next time you park your vehicle, make sure it is not parked haphazardly on the footpaths or sidewalks of the arterial roads.

Else, you would have to shell out a huge amount as fine — not to the City traffic police but to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as well.

Parking on footpaths or sidewalks is going to leave a deep hole in your wallet as BBMP has proposed to impose a penalty of Rs 5,000 on four-wheelers and Rs 500 on two-wheelers.

The BBMP, taking serious note on deformation of its arterial roads, footpaths and sidewalks due to haphazard parking of vehicles, has stated that wayward parking is causing a heavy loss to BBMP, apart from causing inconvenience to the commuters due to traffic congestion.

BBMP Commissioner K Jairaj, in a press statement, has said that the penalty would come into effect after discussions with the police department and BBMP officers and following all legal formalities. Suggestions from the general public will also be solicited and considered, he added.

BBMP chief engineer Sathyanarayana said that BBMP would only impose penalty on vehicles parked on footpaths or sidewalks and not on the roads, which will be taken care of by the traffic police.

On when this rule would come into effect, he said the BBMP Commissioner would decide on it. However, Mr Jairaj was unavailable for comment.

The City traffic police reacting to this proposal by BBMP has said it is not averse to the idea as traffic violations especially parking on no parking zones, footpaths and sidewalks is a menace.

A senior City traffic police officer, said the police department would discuss the issue with the BBMP and help in solving this menace which he said is causing traffic congestion in various busy roads.

The City traffic police books around 3,000 parking violation cases in a week and about 10,000 in a month and imposes a fine of Rs 100 as per the Sec 190 (Clause 117) of the Motor Vehicle Act, he said. In 2006, a total of 78,935 towing cases were booked and Rs 1.63 crore was collected as fine.

What about 3-wheelers? Does that mean they can do what they wish to?
