BANGALORE: With its plan to convert playgrounds into parking lots attracting criticism from residents, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Saturday decided to drop the idea. The civic agency, instead assured that the playgrounds would be upgraded.

The BBMP had proposed to construct multi-level ramped-type car parks on playgrounds and also at public vacant spaces under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission (JNNURM). But residents from various areas had opposed the projects saying that children would be deprived of space to play.

“The BBMP will be committed to develop play grounds in every ward and provide facilities,” the BBMP release said.

Earlier in the day, the Bangalore City Youth Congress Committee staged a protest against the construction of parking lots in play grounds. The Committee accused the civic agency of already having ruined playgrounds by allowing tents for commercial purposes.

A release from the committee said that BBMP’s move to build parking lots would affect children.
