The BBMP’s plan to construct underground parking at four playgrounds in the City has received mixed responses.

While many criticised the plan, a few others extended a cautious welcome to the plan.

“It’s a good idea. But the Palike should use the best technology to execute the work. It is a good idea considering there is such less space for parking vehicles. If we can have extra space to park more vehicles, it should be welcomed. We have to sacrifice something if we want better infrastructure.

Underground parking complexes will not affect sports activities. However, till the work is complete, we should provide alternative arrangements to children who use these playgrounds.”

-Syed Kirmani, former cricketer

“The idea is totally absurd and lacks foresight. How can they have a playground with a cement roofing?

Hundreds of sportspersons use the ground. Should they be deprived of it because of the Palike’s plan? Nursery schools and other sports associations located at Shanthinagar, Akkithimanahally, Austin Town, Double Road and Richmond Town conduct their annual sports meets at the Akkithimmanahalli grounds. Where will they go now? I hope BBMP drops the idea.”

-Mr Ismail, building contractor, Shanthinagar

“For me, it seems a good idea. The playgrounds can be set up atop the parking complex. If people can have swimming pools on terraces, why can’t we have a playground over parking complexes?”

-Vijay Bhargav Agile, Manager, MNC

“The BBMP proposal is an ill-conceived move. How can a playground be created over a concrete basement? Has public opinion been sought on such a vital issue? All citizens must come together to stall the dangerous move.”

-Mirle Karthik, Malleswaram

“The Palike has already deprived children of playgrounds by converting many of them into parks. Children will suffer as they will be deprived of a playground. The BJP demands the Palike should withdraw the proposal.”

-B N Vijay Kumar, president, BJP Bangalore unit .

“The playground behind Chikkalalbagh is the only one near my home. We will have to stay at home once the Palike starts the construction work here”

-Naveen, student

PLAY OFF

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has come out with a fresh plan to provide parking space for vehicles in Bangalore. BBMP has announced plans to build underground parking complexes beneath four playgrounds in the City. The Palike officials feel that land above the complexes would be made conducive for sports activities.
