BANGALORE: Apart from bad road conditions and public transport vehicles stopping haphazardly to catch passengers, parking space on roads are turning out to be a prime obstacle for motorists in the city.

These days, one can see traffic jams even on by-lanes because a major portion of these roads have turned into parking space for two-wheelers.

Besides slowing vehicles down, the parked vehicles also cause accidents, many motorists feel. “Alternate parking arrangements should be provided to ease traffic congestion and the authorities should chalk out rules for this. Roads are not wide enough to meet the parking needs.

Commuting through commercial places has become very strenuous, especially during peak hours, because of this increasing number of vehicles,” said Meenakshi Kamath, who rides a scooter.

Many people are of the view that the authorities ought to clear parking areas from prime commercial locations like Chickpet, Commercial Street, Brigade Road and even Koramangala. Though there are parking complexes near some commercial areas, people seem to prefer parking on the roads as it is more convenient and free.

“The rate of accidents in these areas has also increased because of this. People tend to collide with the parked vehicles while over-taking. Widening the roads is not possible in busy areas,” said Arunachalam, another motorist.
