Measures to preserve catchment area

Measures to preserve catchment area
New Indian Express

The cry to save TG Halli reservoir got louder, as developers targeted its lush green environs for housing and commercial projects.

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) officials have to deal with depleting water levels and the changing land usage. BWSSB wishes to fence the area.

The area needs fencing because apart from meeting the drinking water needs of the people, it is also one of the prime locations for migratory birds like bar-headed goose migrating from Tibet.

Along the reservoir bed are a few shrub jungles, which also need to be protected. The water level has gone down considerably over the years as no care has been taken to preserve the area along the reservoir.

Water is being used not only for drinking and irrigation but also for other purposes like washing cars. The catchment area should be taken care of, in order to preserve the water.
