BANGALORE: The government has decided to remove slums in Bangalore in a phased manner and provide houses to its dwellers.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy with senior officials of Urban Development department and BBMP.

The CM who visited slums in Chamarajpet on Sunday had called a meeting of officials to chalk out a plan of action to remove all slums in a phased manner.

Former minister B Z Zameer Ahamed Khan told reporters after the meeting that the government would construct apartments in two slums in Chamarajpet. Besides apartments, these ‘slums’ will have civic amenities including a swimming poll and a library, he added.

On construction of houses on storm water drains, Khan said that the government will remove these encroachments by giving a compensation of Rs 15,000 per family. A total of Rs 4.5 crore has been sanctioned for this, he added.

He also said that the government will construct a hi-tech bus stand at the K R Market in the coming months. The meeting was attended by Urban Development Principal Secretary Lakshmi Venkatachala, BBMP Commissioner K Jairaj among others.

Earlier a group of slum dwellers from Chamarajpet presented a memorandum to Kumaraswamy seeking better civic facilities.
