BANGALORE: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s direction to slap Rs one lakh fine on the management of a commercial complex at Chamarajpet has certainly sent a strong warning to those dumping waste outside their buildings.
But, will the CM take similar action against those responsible for maintaining cleanliness at Vidhana Soudha? Water glasses, plastic bags, food waste, fruits and other waste are dumped in and around Vidhana Soudha, Legislative Home (LH) premises and also in Cubbon Park (including the High Court). On Sunday, the CM had ordered the BBMP to fine the erring complex management.
The Horticulture Department, which is responsible for maintaining gardens around Vidhana Soudha as well as Cubbon Park expressed helplessness as the government employees themselves were littering the places. Even the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has to clear the garbage in these areas.
That apart, these buildings do not have a proper solid waste management system despite hundreds of people, including tourists visiting their everyday.
Director of Horticulture Department Dr G K Vasanth Kumar said there are many government offices inside Cubbon Park and a lot of filth is accumulated near these offices.
“There is an urgent need for public and tourists’ support for our initiatives to maintain cleanliness and they should not throw waste in the park premises,” he said. The department, he said, would organise a meeting with members of ‘Clean Cubbon Park’ campaign and others to ensure that priority is given to maintain cleanliness.
