BANGALORE: Water problems will worsen, as the city is growing at an alarming pace and it is becoming increasingly difficult to cater to the ever-growing demand.
In the absence of natural sources for water around the city, transportation of Cauvery water is also a major source of expense. These were some of the concerns expressed by vice chairman, Karnataka Planning Commission, Dr A Ravindra, at the inauguration of ‘Our Bengalooru: Citizens Forum,’ which is dedicated to expanding human relationships.
Addressing the gathering, Ravindra expressed his unhappiness at the way media had blamed the BBMP for the recent dog attacks on children. He insisted that it would have been more constructive for forums to discuss the issue for long-term solutions.
Litterateur U R Anantmurthy maintained that Bangalore was being planned without any consideration towards children and the elderly. The city had begun to cater only to the young and their affluent lifestyles, he claimed.
Underlining the need for basic facilities like good libraries, he said that the libraries should also be equipped with books in English and Kannada and Internet connectivity
‘‘Can we make the city more tolerant? Can we revive the spirit of Bangalore? Can we make Bangalore a kinder place?’’ were the questions posed by the former Additional Chief Secretary Chiranjeevi Singh.
He said the pace of growth in the city had made people edgy and devoid of tolerance.
Commenting on the shortage of water in the city, he said there was no visible solution except rain water harvesting.
A newsletter on the organisation was also released on the occasion.
