Pros and cons of axing trees

Pros and cons of axing trees

The Hindu

Bangalore: Nearly 80 trees in Malleswaram, which are almost 60 years old, will be axed to make way for an underpass. Is there a way to save them? The issue came up at a panel discussion held by the Bangalore Environment Trust on `Trees in Bangalore' here on Saturday.

S.V. L. Prasad of Taj West End said, "it is worthwhile to undertake this exercise because there are only a few rare mahogany trees in the area.

BMP Tree Officer Krishna Udupudi said that the area mostly had rain trees which were not rare and could grow fast in a few years. Captain S. Prabala said the Bangalore Environment Trust would push for transplantation.

Former High Court judge M.F. Saldanha said the Tree Act had several loopholes and that it needed to be corrected.
