Bangalore: The fervour of Christmas celebrations on Sunday claimed a victim — traffic. All vehicles were barred from entering Brigade Road after 6.30 pm.
“The heavy pedestrian traffic forced us to take this action. Police from Ulsoor have also been ushered in to take charge of the situation,” DCP (traffic) M A Saleem said.
Traffic on MG Road too was slow-moving with kilometres lined up across the road. The busy central Bangalore streets witnessed more than three times the pedestrian movement that they normally do, police officials said. Consequently, traffic on adjoining roads, Queen’s Road, Cubbon Road, Dickenson Road and Kasturba Road too has been affected.
“Our revenue from parking has reduced, but since Brigade Road is the most happening street for Bangaloreans, this was bound to happen,” Brigade Shops and Establishments Association secretary Suhail Yusuff said.
Police estimated a footfall of over 10,000 people on and around Brigade Road after 6.30 pm on Sunday.
While this may spell traffic trouble, it only goes to show that when it comes to festivals, no one lives it up like Bangaloreans!
