BANGALORE: Hindrance to movement of traffic in Koramangala because of roadside parking dominated the local traffic committee meeting held at the Koramangala Club here on Sunday.

The meeting was a police department initiative to create more parking spaces and to end roadside parking.

The meeting was organised by the Traffic Police (East) Sub Division. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East) M.A. Saleem, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajendra Prasad, and other officers heard the problems of the residents.

Apart from the residents of Koramangala, those from Teachers Colony, Bommanahalli, Wilson Garden, Madiwala and Jakkasandra, took part in the meeting.

Muralidhar Rao said parking of two-wheelers and four-wheelers, especially near traffic junctions, was hindering the flow from B.D.A complex on 7th Cross to 16th Main. He said the problem was acute near Maharaja junction. He urged the police to prevent parking in a radius of 15 feet around traffic junctions.

Anil Kumar, another resident, highlighted the problems caused by BMTC buses parked outside the Koramangala depot. He said the parking of vehicles on both sides of 16th Main had become a nuisance. He wanted the police to provide pedestrian crossing at the junction of 80-feet Road and Ring Road.

Double-parking on Koramangala 8th Main-Sarjapur Road junction and parking of vehicles carrying children to two schools on Koramangala 8th Main dominated the proceedings for some time.

Mr. Prasad said the police had already located a place near a high-tension tower to allow parking of about 700 vehicles. More such places would be created near the towers. This would solve the acute parking problem in Koramangala. Steps would be taken to ban parking on Koramangala 80-feet road. No parking boards would be put up near Aishwarya Bakery in another 15 days, he said.

To a question on the need to smoothen the traffic flow from Sagar Apollo Hospital to Indian Institute of Management, Mr. Prasad said steps were being taken to lay a central median from the hospital to Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology. Action would be taken to regulate criss-crossing of vehicles from Jedi Mara to Meenakshi temple, he said.

On the problems of a Roopena Agraha resident and a doctor from Maternity Hospital, Mr. Prasad said steps were being taken to smoothen the flow of traffic on Hosur Road.

This included relocation of the Bommasandra bus stop and relocating parking of autorickshaws and private vehicles in the area. Similar steps would be taken at Begur.

"We will clear the bottlenecks and reduce the time taken to reach Electronics City," he said.
