Most of the autorickshaws in the City will not ply on December 14 (Thursday) between 6 am and 6 pm with the Autorickshaw Drivers Union deciding to strike work in support of their demands.
Working President of the Union Srinivasamurthy said on Sunday auto drivers, as a prelude to the strike, will stage dharnas at Banappa Park from Monday to Wednesday and strike work in the City. However, autorickshaw services will be affected only on Thursday. Over 14,000 autorickshaw drivers, who are members of the Autorickshaw Drivers Union (affiliated to CITU) and 6,000 drivers of Adarsha Auto and Taxi Drivers Union will participate in the strike. However Mr Srinivasamurthy exuded confidence that besides the members of these two organisations other autorickshaw drivers would also support the strike.
The union has called for the strike in protest against the State government’s decision to impose a fine up to Rs 10,000 besides one year’s imprisonment for violating permit conditions.
The union has demanded that the lane system implemented for autorickshaws on several roads of the City should be withdrawn. The third major demand is that the State government should extend autorickshaw drivers the benefit of the Yashaswini health scheme and introduce pension scheme. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and Adarsha Auto and Taxi Drivers’ Union are supporting the strike, Mr Srinivasamurthy said.
