Residents of unauthorised buildings might just find themselves in darkness or may have to go without water. Blatant violations of building bylaws might get one’s name published in the newspaper under the ‘List of defaulters’ too.

Residents of unauthorised buildings might just find themselves in darkness or may have to go without water. Blatant violations of building bylaws might get one’s name published in the newspaper under the ‘List of defaulters’ too.

Seeking respite from the rampant violations and mushrooming illegal constructions, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), has now put in place an action plan to curb the menace. In a recent meeting convened by BMP Commissioner K Jairaj, senior BMP, BDA and BMTF officials, discussed the various vigilance and monitoring activities needed to check violations.

“Service providers like BWSSB and Bescom will be roped in to disrupt water and power supply to unauthorised buildings. This will work as a good deterrent for those who violate the bylaws. We also plan to publish the names of encroachers and building bylaw violators in leading newspapers,” said senior BMP officials.

While, detailed survey of unauthorised constructions in private layouts, revenue sites, civic amenities sites on both BDA and private layouts will be carried out.

Each zone will identify five big commercial establishments with severe encroachments and building violations and initiate action.

To expedite the process of clearing encroachment of properties, the BMP has proposed an amendment to the Karnataka Public Procurement (KPP) Act. The BMP has lined up a major eviction drive to curb misuse of basements and cellars. “Encroachment of basements for purposes other than parking, is encouraging on-street parking and causing traffic hassles. We will initiate joint action against BMP and BDA to remove unauthorised structures and prevention of building violation in Nandini layout, Vishwabharati layout. We hope to zero in on Kalyan Mantaps with basement encroachments,” added officials.

First meeting

Meanwhile, The Committee on Infrastructure and Resource Mobilisation with respect to Greater Bangalore held its first meeting on Monday.

The committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary A K Agarwal is understood to have taken stock of preliminary issues concerning physical infrastructure in the BMP area and the incoming local bodies and the scope of the work in terms of bridging the gap between them.

Official representatives said that investment plans and financial requirements needed to improve and implementation of physical infrastructure projects in the peripheral areas were deliberated upon. It is said that detailed project reports (DPRs) on water supply and sanitation projects in the City Municipal Council limits are under preparation and that they shall be slotted to receive funds available under the Centre’s JNNURM.
