It’s all in a name

It’s all in a name
11 Places, 11 New Names In Karnataka. How Much Will Change And How
The Times of India

Bangalore: Other than this dateline, what else will change once Bengalooru comes into effect?
Get ready for Bengalooru IT.in, Bengalooru flower show, Bengalooru University, maybe even Bengaloored!
And how about IIM, Bengalooru and IIITBengalooru? Those will happen too, according to the government, because though autonomous, they are funded by either the Centre or the state.
“All public sector undertakings, all Mahanagara Palikes, all universities will change their names according to the name change. Besides this, all land records, transactions, Geological Survey of India maps, international documents, city records, court records will change to the new name. With this, we are only saying our name was originally something else, it has got into an aberration that has to be corrected,’’ Kannada and culture secretary I M Vittal Murthy said.
It will be Bengalooru Metro, Bengalooru Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The name of even the under-construction Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli is to become Bengalooru international airport.
“If anyone wants to be identified with the city, the name will have to naturally change,’’ Murthy contended. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will henceforth be called as Bengalooru Mahanagara Palike. A resolution to the effect has been passed by the BMP Council over a month ago. All other city corporations will follow suit.
Once the changes are gazetted, babies will be born only in Bengalooru, properties will be registered in Bengalooru and so on. But where private name changes are concerned like the Bangalore hospital or the Bangalore Derby, that is up to the individual organisations.
“It will take time to change over. Water finds its own level. Who had thought we would all refer to Madras as Chennai or Bombay as Mumbai? It has happened,’’ Murthy felt.
CHANGE DA KA, U KA TOO
Though the names of 11 cities are changing, the demand for change is not yet over. Litterateurs and citizens have raised two other demands — the name of Dakshina Kannada (Da Ka) and Uttara Kannada (U Ka) should be changed to Mangalooru and Karwar districts, respectively. Bombay-Karnataka and Hyderabad-Karnataka should be called Kittur Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka respectively. The logic behind the Da Ka and U Ka change is: Dakshina Kannada is not the southern most tip of the state, nor is Uttara Kannada the northern most. British called it North and South Canara for convenience, this has been loosely translated. Mangalooru and Karwar would be more appropriate, as they are district headquarters.
