Police Commissioner N Achutha Rao told Deccan Herald that “the helmet rule was implemented without giving much time for two-wheeler owners to purchase helmets.

Penalties will be imposed on those violating the helmet rule from November 6 in the City.

Though the helmet rule came into effect from Wednesday, Bangalore police decided to relax enforcement of the rule up to November 6. Police Commissioner N Achutha Rao told Deccan Herald that “the helmet rule was implemented without giving much time for two-wheeler owners to purchase helmets.

As the helmet rule enforcement had been postponed twice, earlier this year, people naturally assumed that it would be no different this time.”

He said that for the time being two-wheeler riders without helmets are being let off with a warning. The traffic policemen have been instructed to educate two-wheeler riders on the need to wear helmets. “However, anyone found violating the rule from Monday will be fined. The first time offenders will be fined Rs 100 and those who repeat violation of the rule will be penalised Rs 300”, said the commissioner. The rule specifies that only helmets with ISI mark should be worn by two-wheeler riders. Pillion riders need not wear helmet.
