The concept of Greater Bangalore has brought up the need to increase the number of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) zones to eight from the existing three zones for purpose of governing additional area that has been included in it.
Greater Bangalore project totally covers an area of 696 sq kms at present.
Officials of the Housing and Urban Development have estimated that with the formation of Greater Bangalore, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) requires an additional 1,200 officials and Rs 15.39 crore per month towards their salaries. The additional staff will be deputed from the PWD, the Karnataka Lok Seva Commission and other government departments. Presently, the number of working staff in the BMP is 18,070. Of these, 11,900 are permanent employees while the remaining are on contract. The money required for disbursement of their salaries is Rs 30 crore. Officials of the rank of KAS would be deputed at the newly-formed zones. VTN
