Cleaner Bangalore if KSPCB has its way

Cleaner Bangalore if KSPCB has its way

Bangalore: Namma Bengalooru will become much more cleaner soon. Plans are afoot to get garbage segregated at domestic level, the organic waste recycled for manure and the inorganic waste dumped in the filling sites.
To translate the plan into action, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), BMP, BMRDA and the builders are working towards identifying four landfill sites in the city to process garbage.
“Till date there is not a single landfill site to dump garbage in Bangalore. While only 40% of the solid waste is recycled for manure, the rest is dumped everywhere — from open plots, lakes and road sides,’’ KSPCB chairman H C Sharat Chandra told The Times of India.
With Bangalore generating around 2,500 tonnes of solid waste every day and the waste accumulating at a rate of 4 kg per family each day, the committee headed by Sharat Chandra decided to start the hunt for land to install scientific waste processing units.
To be located in the four corners of the city, the landfill sites, to be bought by the builder, will be shortlisted in around three months.
A small committee with representatives from each body along with builders will meet regularly to plan, co-ordinate and execute the decisions taken. “But in the longer run, landfills are not the answer to the increasing waste generated in the city as they would get exhausted sooner or later,’’ Sharat Chandra said. People need to realise and practise the importance of segregating garbage so that Bangalore creates a model for solid waste management. Asked if KSPCB would consider making it mandatory for the various layouts to have their individual compost pit like in Mumbai and Pune, the KSPCB chairman said that such initiative may take some time.
