SWM cess: BMP exploring options

In a bid to streamline collection of monthly solid waste management (SWM) cess, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is seeking to piggyback on Bescom’s electricity bill collection.

BMP Commissioner K Jairaj on Friday noted that a new collection mechanism is being looked at in conjunction with Bescom.

The actual accruals from SWM cess can be in the range of Rs 15 crore per month, he said. Solid waste management cess was proposed to be introduced in the BMP from January next year with health inspectors themselves slotted to collect the same. Alternatively, the BMP was also exploring the option of the cess being collected by garbage contractors or citizens themselves remitting it along with property tax.


According to the Commissioner, the BMP is also occupied with the legal aspect of the SWM cess collection, that of adjusting the cess to the size of a building when there is more than a family unit residing in the building.

MONTHLY SLAB

The monthly slab on SWM cess as it stands today is as below:

Residential unit: Upto 1,000 sq ft: Rs 10; between 1,001 sq ft and 3,000 sq ft: Rs 20; 3,000 sq ft and above: Rs 50

Commercial unit: Upto 1,000 sq ft: Rs 50; between 1,001 sq ft and 3,000 sq ft: Rs 100; 3,000 sq ft and above: Rs 200

Industrial unit: Upto 1,000 sq ft: Rs 50; between 1,001 sq ft and 3,000 sq ft: Rs 200; 3,000 sq ft and above: Rs 300
