Soon, the BMTC will introduce 400 additional schedules (trips) on the busy routes during the peak hours, announced Transport Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy, while speaking to presspersons on Monday.
“A study of the bus routes with high passenger density during peak hours has been mapped. The extra trips will be between 7 am and 11 am, 4 pm and 8 pm,” said the Minister, adding that the number of ‘Mahila Special’ buses would also be increased.
“The response to the Special buses for patients and women is slowly building up. However, we intend to increase the Mahila Special buses from 10 to 25.”
Among other plans, the department will build a multi-purpose complex opposite the KSRTC office in Shantinagar to augment its revenue.
Profits
“Not many urban transport corporations in the country are making profits. But in Karnataka, we are ringing in profits. And hence we have been able to cut down fares in Volvo buses plying off peak hours.”
Growing menace of overloaded maxicabs is a matter of concern, admitted the Minister. “We are renting out our buses for temple festivals, weddings and public functions. Still many people go by maxicabs and don’t mind the overcrowding,” he rued.
Electric bus
For the first time in the country, an electric bus will be introduced in Mysore City.
The project is being finalised in consultation with the Rail India Technical And Economical Services and Infrastructure (RITES) and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Karnataka. The project will be completed by the end of December, said the Minister.
