Ten-point agenda to ease traffic woes

BANGALORE: The City Police and Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) have now joined hands to implement the 10-point programme announced by the Chief Minister to improve the traffic situation in the City.
The traffic police officials hope that implementation of the project will help bring some order on the chaotic city roads. ‘‘This six month programme will show a visible improvement.
The programme will provide relief to the commuters and reduce the traffic congestion,’’ M N Reddi, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), told this website’s newspaper.
The project includes improvement of the road engineering aspect, drain improvement, redesigning of traffic junctions, asphalting 200 kilometres, fix concrete medians, road marking and 100 kilometres of arterial roads.
Drain improvement involves the clearance and diversion of surface water from the roadway and adjoining land. Over 30 locations have been identified and appropriate steps are being implemented.
‘‘Based upon the past experiences and reviewing the problems of the commuters, we are taking steps to solve the problem. Drastic improvements can be cited in areas like Coffee Board Junction, Windsor Manor area and Double Road’’, he added.
Fifty junctions facilitating rapid traffic clearance is identified and junction widening and redesigning is in progress. ‘‘We are redesigning the junctions and widening intersections. Some of the major roads are K H Road, Johnson Market, Jaymahal Circle and Old Madras Road’’, he added.
Over 10,000 meters of road is cited and longitudinal median blocks separating the dual carriageways and opposing streams of traffic is in progress. Improving the traffic congestions, adequate road marking, providing clear delineation and guidance for road users are in progress.
The BMP and the traffic police are also clearing the obstructing trees and other utilities such as electric and telephone poles and transformers.
