Saldanha urges CM to protect trees
Deccan Herald
The Transparency International India (TII) has urged the Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to take measures to safeguard trees, which are expected to be cut in the name of widening of roads.
Mr M F Saldanha, retired Judge and chairman of India chapter of TII, in his letter dated June 29 written to the CM, has said that over 1,900 trees have been butchered in the last two years in the city alone to widen the roads. If the same continues, Bangalore would completely lose its green cover, he argued.
Holding inefficient traffic management as the reason for heavy traffic, Mr Saldanha has urged Mr Kumaraswamy to ask his officials to be more professional in their approach and set a deadline to improve the traffic system. Mr Saldanha has also expressed his apprehensions over the government’s decision to have Metro rail. The Metro would finish the green cover of the city, besides razing down buildings, he feared in the letter.
