THE Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has formed a Technical and Vigilance Cell as recommended by the Expert Committee, constituted by the High Court to study the condition of roads and drains in Bangalore.

The cell would comprise an executive engineer and three assistant engineers.

The role of the cell would include conducting surprise inspections (to ensure that the quality of the works being executed were satisfactory), ensuring that the items procured were of good quality and verifying the accuracy of bills passed for various civil works.

The cell would also collect the details on technically sanctioned estimates and modified estimates at random to assess the difference, if any.

All the complaints on civil contracts can be referred to this cell for investigation.

The BMP has also brought in officials from the Central Enforcement Division (CED) to form the Vigilance Cell.

The cell would assist in conducting technical reviews and project works, apart from co-ordinating with the Additional Advisor (Information Technology) to build a Management of Information System (MIS).

It would also monitor the contingency plans and activities undertaken to tackle rain havoc. The BMP officers have been directed to cooperate with the officers of the cell for its smooth functioning.

It may be recalled that the Expert Committee, headed by Captain Raja Rao, in its report submitted to the High Court, had suggested that a Vigilance Cell be formed to check the affairs of the BMP. The committee had recommended that the cell be supervised directly by the BMP Commissioner.

Campaign: With the government considering the option of bringing in an ordinance for regularising the deviated portions of buildings in Koramangala, the members of Koramangala Welfare Association (KWA) launched a door-todoor awareness campaign.

The residents of Koramangala, who have been served with Provisional Orders (PO) and Confirmatory Orders (CO), have no idea about the future course of action.

The members of KWA would approach those who have been served with such notices and help them reply to the notices.
