“We must seek to benchmark (ourselves) against the best we can achieve, and not against Singapore or Hong Kong”

Karnataka’s politicians can still be wistful about making a Singapore or Hong Kong out of Bangalore, but Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner K Jairaj feels that the City should just seek to become the best it can be.

“We must seek to benchmark (ourselves) against the best we can achieve, and not against Singapore or Hong Kong”, he said on Friday at the Yadalam Nanjaiah Setty memorial lecture on ‘The Art of Managing a Public Organisation — theory and practice’ organised by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Sai Grace foundation.

Mr Jairaj, who took over as BMP Commissioner for a second time in early May, said that he would be able to speak about the ongoing improvement processes and systems in the BMP only six months down the line. “BMP is still in the making,” was his line.

Mr Jairaj noted that the “art” of managing a public organisation lies in its leader himself being a performer. The commissioner also noted that most public organisations were dysfunctional because of their hierarchical nature.
