BANGALORE: Bangalore Mahanagara Pallike (BMP) is all set for a public-private participation for greening Bangalore.

To beautify and create more green spaces in the Garden City, BMP will encourage and support individuals; NGOs and self help groups to take up planting this season.

For this, BMP plans to supply free seedlings and seeds to those interested, provided they take up planting and maintenance for a year. One can take up this planting drive in kitchen gardens, roadsides, hospitals, and offices or in schools.

All one needs to do is to give in writing the choice of area, the type of seedlings and get registered at BMP’s office. BMP will inspect the area and according to the requirement and suitability, provide seedlings and tree guards. Henceforth, it will keep an eye on the maintenance work taken up by the group.

According to Deputy Conservator of Forests Krishna D Udapudi, the idea is public involvement. "Nothing can be better if government and people join hands in enhancing greenery of Bangalore."

Doorstep service: Bangloreans need not travel all the way to Lalbagh or other nurseries in search of quality seedlings and seeds. BMP plans to come at your very doorstep in all the three zones.

This season, BMP will start its first doorstep facility. Plant lovers can get seeds and seedlings at consessional rates with BMP giving 75 percent subsidy. According to Udapudi, at present, this service is restricted to ward no 67 and soon all the wards would be covered.

For seedlings and seeds, customers can place their orders. The seedlings will be procured from good nurseries and the focus will be on ornamental and fruit yielding plants like lemon, imli, guava, sapota and mango.

In the initial phase, BMP’s three lorries and vans will be used. Later vans will be specifically used for this purpose in accordance with demand.
