Bangalore: K. Jairaj, Commissioner of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, on Monday directed the supervisory engineering staff to make a survey of the progress of works taken up under the five-point programme periodically in all the wards and submit a comprehensive report.

According to a press release here on Monday, the commissioner, while reviewing the progress of all departments, said that removal of silt from drains, footpath restoration, debris clearance, potholes filling, and spill over works should be completed by June 30 to prevent flooding during the monsoon. He also directed the supervisory staff to carry out inspection every day. The zonal joint commissioners have been instructed to monitor these works. The officials have also been asked to meet with the representatives of residents' associations and build a rapport with the public.

Mr. Jairaj has directed the zonal officers to implement the contingency plan to ensure no flooding takes place during the rainy season. Work to clean the mouths of shoulder drains, repair storm water drains and provide lead off to drains wherever necessary should be taken up in vulnerable wards. Control rooms should be provided additional staff and vehicles, according to the commissioner's directions. According to the release, he has stressed the need for an intensive cleanliness drive in all the wards, especially market areas, hospitals, flyovers, parks and public places.

The Health Department should take steps to ensure that there is hygiene at hotels and eateries. Civic amenities and infrastructure should be improved in the market areas.

The zonal officers have been asked to develop arterial roads for the integrated development of the city. They have been asked to identify arterial roads zone-wise and take up repair works, restoration of footpaths, and pruning of branches. The electricity department has been instructed to work with the outsourced agencies to ensure 100 per cent lighting, the release has said.
