BANGALORE: With work on the Metro project expected to start soon, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) is now busy building a team to assist the government agency in implementing the biggest ever infrastructure project in the city.
The BMRC Board has decided to appoint 84 officials at different levels and the process has already been initiated.
The recruitment drive is important for implementing the Rs 6,400 crore project as the BMRC is now functioning with just 12 officers, including its managing director.
For its manpower requirements, the corporation is looking for expertise in State and Central government departments, PSUs, private firms and even for retired employees from railways and other departments.
Over a thousand serving and retired officers have responded to the BMRC’s call and the agency is now scrutinising their applications.
‘‘An expert committee will be constituted to select the officers and officials at different levels,’’ BMRC MD V Madhu told this website’s newspaper.
The officer said the recruitment will be completed within a month and the staff would be hired on a three-year contract.
Officers in signalling, civil engineering, power and other fields will join BMRC as Deputy General Managers, Managers, Supervisors and other ranks.
‘‘We are now in the process of building and positioning our team,’’ Madhu added. They will assist the project implementation by supervising the work as a number of contractors will be involved in the process.
The BMRC officers have the responsibility to ensure that the mega infrastructure project, which criss-crosses the city, will not disturb the beauty and majesty of the city.
The eco-friendly project is expected to make roads safer by reducing the number of accidents. In the first phase, the project will have two corridors; North-South linking Peenya and JP Nagar and East-West from Byappanahalli to Magadi Road. It will have 32 stations.
The new mode of city transport is expected to ferry around 8.2 lakh commuters back and forth each day, reducing the burden on surface transport.
