BANGALORE: Bus journeys were never the last word in comfort. People preferred trains if they were keen on comfort. But times have changed.
State transport corporations and private operators are offering the best they can so that commuters enjoy the ride.
The KSRTC has introduced chargers for laptop and cell phones, ACs, and soundproof window panes in its Volvo buses, and the private operators are don’t want to be left behind.
KSRTC director (vigilance and operations) Bhaskar Rao said the idea was to make passengers feel special. KSRTC serves mineral water and snacks in its Volvos. Imported cushions are another attraction.
KSRTC has increased the distance between seats, provided more legroom, and the seat inclination and headrest are far more comfortable than before. These go a long way in making journeys smoother.
Volvos also handle vibration and sound better. Drivers are trained to maintain steady speeds. The timings are very convenient, which is another reason commuters are switching to buses.
Private operators like Conti Travels, which operates from Kalasipalya are trying to catch up with the KSRTC.
Chandrashekar of Conti Travels said, ‘‘We have been in this business for over 25 years, and the demand has increased tremendously,’’ he said.
Their buses takes seven hours to Coimbatore, while trains takes 10.‘‘Volvo sleeper coaches will make travel more comfortable,’’ he added.
