Display ID cards or face action: Police to auto drivers

Display ID cards or face action: Police to auto drivers

BANGALORE: After having completed the distribution of identity cards to auto drivers, the city traffic police have now passed on a strict direction to all of them: Display the IDs or face the action.

In a bid to reduce the inconvenience to the commuters the traffic police had decided to make ID cards mandatory for auto drivers.

The first phase of issuing the cards was 15 April. So far, identity cards have been issued to 58,000 auto drivers, police said.

The police said though there were about 70,000 autos in the City only 58,000 drivers have obtained cards. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M N Reddi said others would also procure the card soon.

‘‘Approximately 12,000 drivers have not obtained the IDs. The initiative was started after a dialogue with the auto unions.

“When 58,000 can turn up voluntarily, others will also obtain once we take up strict drive against non-display of IDs behind the driver’s seat,’’ he said.

Reddi also said it was more important on the part of the auto drivers to display the cards behind the seat, enabling the commuters to know the pin code of the driver.

He also said the checking drive will begin in another 3-4 days in order to provide some more time to the drivers who have not obtained the cards yet.

How you can file complaints

Next time if you are charged more or face any problem from a auto driver all you need to do is to call the traffic police.

Now that more than 75 percent of the auto drivers have the IDs, commuters can take down the pin number printed on the ID card displayed behind the driver’s seat and call up the traffic control number 103 to lodge the complaint.

As the details of the driver are being computerised, it would be matter of seconds for the sleuths to check whom the driver is.
