BANGALORE: Garbage clearance that had been affected in the city following the shutdown on Thursday became normal in most of the areas on Friday. While pourakarmikas worked overtime, garbage lorry drivers made over 50 additional trips to the "makeshift' dumping yards to transport the accumulated waste.

However, 10 per cent of waste that had piled up in the health wards coming under the jurisdiction of Malleswaram and Yeshwanthpur areas could not be cleared on Friday. "We have managed to clear Thursday's garbage. But 10 per cent of Friday's waste could not be cleared as some workers wanted to leave early for the Ambedkar Jayanthi celebrations," general secretary of the Bangalore Mahanagara Swachate Lorry Maalikara Mattu Guttigedarara Sangha S. Balasubramaniam said.

However, heaps of garbage strewn all over the roads were a common sight in several areas under the Rajarajeshwari City Municipal Council and other CMCs. Because of the shutdown on Thursday, garbage collection and transportation was severely hit all over the city, as pourakarmikas and lorry drivers could not turn up for work.
