BIAL expansion in the wings

Bangalore: Pending a few clarifications, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has formally approved the “redesign’’ and “expansion’’ of the project to accommodate 11.4 million passengers and increased cargo handling.
A final decision, however, is still pending BIAL Board approval after a meeting on April 7 sought clarifications. A press release from the company said the decision was expected within the next few weeks.
The redesign is based on the traffic forecast done in June 2005, which estimated that by airport opening date — April 2, 2008 — it will have to handle a traffic of 6.7 million passengers against the initial design for 4.5 million passengers. By 2010, the figure is expected to go up to 8.5 million.
